Three Tips for Changing Your Eating Habits
Rosh Hashana—the Jewish New Year—is coming in just a couple of days. To me, celebrating a new year means an opportunity to start something new, to make a change that will bring us joy.
Going vegan was one of the biggest changes that I made in my life and I can’t begin to tell you how much joy that change has brought me. Ever since I made that change, it’s been my life mission to help others do the same - change their lives by changing their diet. I’ve been teaching, writing, creating and sharing recipes to help people make that transition, and I’ve seen so many people do it, and it brought joy to their lives, too.
So, if you’ve been thinking about making changes in your eating habits, today I want to tell you that you can do it. You can change your diet to bring more joy to your life. You have that power.
When I realized that something wasn’t right in the way my body was “working,” I decided to make a change in my life, which meant changing my diet. To do that, I had to change the way I was thinking. Changing the way we think, as I’m sure you know, is not the easiest thing to do, but I knew that once I got to a new state of mind, I could achieve anything, and so, that was the first thing I worked on.
Tip #1: Everything in Life Is an Acquired Taste
Instead of accepting my preference for some foods as a given, I changed my preferences. And now, talking from experience, I can tell you that everything in life is an acquired taste. You can change your palate and you can change your habits, replace habits that don’t serve you with ones that will lead you to where you want to be.
Tip #2: Believe That You Can Make the Change and You Will Make It
The most important thing to do if you want to change your eating habits is to believe that you can do it.
Remind yourself daily that you believe that you can do it. And you will.
Never give up. Never say “I can't do it,” because words translate to actions, so, if we think we can’t do something and we tell ourselves that we can’t do it, we won’t be able to do it. Instead, believe in yourself and know that you can do it, trust me, I’ve been there. If you decide you want to do it, you are in control and in charge of your own health, body, and feelings.
Tip #3: Find Great Food Alternatives and Making the Change Will Be So Much Easier
One of the things that helped me the most as I was going dairy free and making the transition to plant-based diet, was finding healthy alternatives to my favorite foods. It is a lot easier to make the change when you know you can still eat delicious and filling meals. You just need to eat the right things.
And lucky for you, coming up with new and renewed healthy vegan recipes is my passion! So check out my blog and my book for some alternatives to your favorite dishes!
